Ah, but enough about Chuck Clarke, it was time to get down to business so we could get the heck out of there before it got dark and we killed ourselves trying to get down that road!

On to serious business and what the retreat was all about.  We were facilitated by a group of guys from our district who did an incredible job working us through an exercise that aided is us in developing a 5-year goal plan for our club.  I have to tell you I have sat through many a planning session for businesses, governments, and environmental non-profits and this method is the best one I have ever encountered.  So I offer you here our results.  Please click on Stories on the heading above and then click on Part 6 to read the 5-year goals.  Your comments and suggestions will be welcomed.  All of the photos of the retreat are on the Photo page.

The 5-Year Goals for Morro Bay Rotary

 

In defining the various elements of our retreat study, participants came up with (in order of importance):

 

What our club stands for:

1. Mentoring all new members

2. Recruiting more women

3. Recruiting more young people

 

Other things we want our club to stand for:

a. International participation and leadership

b. Leadership training for members

c. Weekly Community Projects

d.. Volunteering at schools and in our community

e. Having fun meetings

f. Having outstanding speakers

g. Quarterly meetings with high school students

h. Having master PERLS classes every 3 months

 

Our club attributes should be:

1. There should be 40% women members.

2. We need to have a diverse membership.

3. Half the club should be under 40!! (good grief - what happened to diversity?)

 

Other club attributes we would like to have:

a. Members who have enthusiasm and are "doers!"

b. We should have dynamic leadership.

c. More community leaders as members.

d. All of us to have a great sense of humor.

e. Make sure we don't forget to have many senior members.

f. We should have 100% PERLS.

 

Our club service should be:

1. There should be 100% involvement.

2. We should have special dessert socials.

3. We should have many craft talks.

 

Other club service ideas:

a. Have quarterly socials

b. One on one meetings

c. Develop our own "Rotary Book" (similar to Facebook on our web site)

d. We should strive for perfect attendance

e. We should strive for good fellowship

f. How about a weekly newspaper column

g. Strive for a "Family of Rotary"

 

Vocational Service:

1. Ethics in business course for high school graduates

2. Have the 4-Way Test Essay Contest

3. Have 10 to 15 RYLA students

 

Other vocational service ideas:

a. Job Fair for High School students (maybe for college too??)

b. Mentoring to FFA and 4-H kids

c. $10,000 scholarships for high school students

d. Ethics course at community college

e. Summer library program

f. 4-Way test composition or musical composition

g. Critical thinking help twice a year for students

 

Community Service:

1. An annual habitat for humanity project.

2. Do Morro Bay Beautiful projects.

3. Do annual environmental project

 

Other community service projects:

a. Set up a Rotary 211 hotline

b. Destination location (????)

c. Make up a "Chuckipedia" website (like Wikipedia only for Morro Bay Rotary - and named after Chuck Clark).

 

International Service:

1. Fund one student in a Muslim nation each year (approximate cost $300 per year)

2. Fund water wells for African nations.

3. Send 10 members to Rotary International Convention.

 

More International Service Ideas:

a. Give an Ambassadorial Scholarship to a college student to go to study in a foreign country.

b. Fund a fire truck to Mexico.

c. Plastic bag clean up in India (and maybe even in America!)

d. Support for the people affect by earthquake.

e. Do several NIDs

f. Run a group study exchange

g. 100% CERT training

 

What we desire in Public Image:

1. To have a community outreach public relations team.

2. Make signs indicating our community projects.

3. Press releases on all projects

 

Other public image ideas:

a. Be sure to recruit community leaders

b. Have the best website and make sure everyone USES IT!

c. Something about a radio show ????

 

Rotary Foundation:

1. To have 100% Paul Harris Fellows

2. To have special funds for members to be Paul Harris Fellows

3. To have $80,000 for high school scholarships

 

More Rotary Foundation ideas:

a. Have 100% permanent fund

b. Have 3 non-members as Paul Harris Fellows

 

Fundraising:

1. Our goal is to raise $250,000 by five years.

 

Club Size:

1. We want to have 100 ACTIVE members!
