WEATHER
Warm, sunny, – our new wonderful weather - and with a cool view of “the poor man’s Pebble Beach”.

LUNCH
Chicken burger and burger burger, potato salad, pickle wedges for good measure, their famous chips (thank you), and 2 kinds of cheese cakes!!!

PRESIDENT NICKS TIE COLOR
President Nick looked pretty darn spiffy in his yellow tie with what I think were diamond shapes (color unknown).  Prez to be Carol presented current Prez Nick with a very nice tie from her Brazil trip – this writer wasn’t able to see the tie but it looked very cool and Prez Nick promised to wear it at his step down party – as long as the Club didn’t do anything mean to it.

Matt Franklin led us in the pledge.

INVOCATION
Ken Casida led us in our invocation.

PROGRAM
Our program today featured Judy Mahan, Director for the Small Business Development Center for Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Incubator and HotHouse (guessing that makes for a long business card).  Judy provided us with a snapshot of how you can move from conception of a business model / idea to being able to put that idea into action.

The program collaborates with Cal Poly, local government (City and County), and the business community.  The program has also created SLO HotHouse where incubators can start up.  This year saw 80 teams “hatching” out of the initial program; out of those, 17 teams made it to their summer accelerated program.  There they are assigned community business mentors where they can meet 1-on-1, receive guidance and by the end of the summer, are ready for demo day.  Then… if they make it thru the summer, they let them come to the Incubator for 2 years where hopefully they continue to grow and become “full-fledged businesses”.

The program provides lots of activities that also stimulate entrepreneurship locally – it’s their goal to build unique and passionate start-ups that will thrive in the County.  Last year alone they had 11 incubator starts, 37 jobs created, 84 small businesses counseled, and 887 counseling hours provided.  Successful you ask – how does saving lives sound??  Inpress Technology, a medical device company, has created a device that can save lives – and already has!!!  They have developed a device to treat postpartum hemorrhage quickly and effectively!!!

In closing, this organization is a vehicle for Economic Development and can promote Economic Vitality – it grows businesses, attracts investment, creates jobs, increases the GDP and creates opportunity; AND for the community, there is faster innovation, it integrates Cal Poly into the SLO community and creates a positive “buzz”.   Thanks for coming Judy!!!

CLOSING
Dan Costley won the 50/50 (he’s buying drinks on Thursday!!!), President Nick closed his next to next to last meeting.
